Reed worked as a news and sports reporter, movie critic, news editor and editorial writer for Hawaii newspapers from 1983 to 1990, primarily at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald. He has a political science degree from the University of Hawaii (Hilo campus), where he edited the student newspaper, the Vulcan News, his senior year and was honored by the student government for outstanding achievements as editor.
